Full dentures have long been the only solution for people who have lost all their teeth, while partial dentures were the go-to fix for people missing some of their teeth.
Today, dental implants and other advances in dentistry have brought dentures into the modern era. With implant-supported dentures, you can restore your smile (even if you’re missing all of your teeth) without the pains and problems associated with traditional dentures.

For decades, traditional dentures may have been the go-to treatment for missing teeth, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t without problems.
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, there are definite disadvantages to dentures, including:
- Fragility
- An awkward, loose, or painful fit
- A less natural look
- Difficulty chewing food (and notorious for coming loose when you eat certain foods)
- Negatively affecting the taste of food
- Impaired speech
When you consider the very problems caused by missing teeth that traditional dentures are meant to correct – bone loss, a changed facial structure, difficulty chewing food, speech difficulties – dentures begin to seem like a less attractive option.
That doesn’t mean that dentures are a complete wash, however. Implant-secured dentures are a new, modern, and totally fantastic treatment option that put an entirely new spin on treatment with traditional dentures.

There are several types of implant-supported dentures (I’ll write more about the most common types in future posts), and they come countless benefits for patients missing some or all of their teeth.
